This review presents tabulated information on the viruses, bacteria and parasites that may infect the infant via breast milk, preceded by similar information on the immunoglobulins, enzymes and other factors in breast milk that have been shown to be active in vitro against these 3 types of microbial contaminants. Viruses detected in breast milk include human immunodeficiency virus and human T cell lymphotrophic virus-1, both of which can be destroyed by pasteurization.
