Protective effects of prostaglandin E2 on pancreatic islet B cells of rats with alloxan induced diabetes

An experimental diabetes model was produced by injection of alloxan monohydrate at 200 mg/kg subcutaneously. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) administered 15 minutes prior to alloxan was able to decrease both the incidence of alloxan-induced diabetes and the average of plasma glucose concentration. The oral glucose tolerance test curves were markedly improved and microscopic sections of pancreatic islets showed an increased of secretory granules in B cells if rats pretreated with PGE2 as compared to the alloxan-treated rats. The results indicate that the acute damage of B cells caused by alloxan is milder in rats pretreated with PGE2. These results suggest that PGE2 may have protective effects on rat pancreatic islet B cells.
