Sorbitol levels in normal Africans and in insulin dependent diabetics

Packed red cell sorbitol was studied in normal African volunteers and in Africans with diabetes mellitus requiring insulin. The mean sorbitol in African patients requiring insulin was higher than in normal volunteers. The packed cell sorbitol level data was more variable than the test as evidenced by a variance of 2.5 times that of the insulin requiring group. The value variance of control population/viriance of test population (F) for the homogeneity of variance showed that the difference was statistically significant (P > 0.025).
