The population potential model proposed by Stewart (1947) provides a statistical explanation of the variation in population density between small areas within a large region. It considers both the number of inhabitants of a place and its distance from other places. The paper studies the population of the Saryupar Plain, Uttar Pradesh, in the light of the potential model. Within the study area, the tahsil scale of area generalization is employed as being a convenient administrative unit for which population data are available.
