Data were collected in the hill region of Uttar Pradesh (which comprises the 5 districts of Garhwal Division) from 350 households in 21 sample villages, on livestock rearing and fodder consumption, fodder supply from agriculture, and green fodder supply and collection from the forest. Fodder from agriculture met the requirement for <6 months of the year and showed high variation both regionally and by altitude. Forests served as a source of fodder, in varying degrees, for 83.71% of households in the region, with >50% of households collecting >50% of their fodder requirement from the forest. Dependence on forest fodder increased with altitude. Collection work was mainly done by women, who spent 215 days a year in fulfilling the requirement for a single household.
