Four hand gliding accidents are reported. Three pilots were inexperienced and one was experienced. The commonest causes were errors made by the pilots and unfavourable wind conditions. Three pilots sustained injuries to the upper limbs, including two shoulder dislocations and one fracture of the humerus. One pilot sustained a severe fracture of the cervical spine and developed tetraplegia. It is recommended that all pilots should be members of a local hang gliding club and that there should be approved schools with adequate supervision. These measures are essential if any decrease in the number of accidents is to be expected in this increasingly popular sport.
