Ultrastructural aspects of fibroblasts during the regression of the tail in tadpoles

Authors studied the ultrastructural aspects of the growth and resorption of the tail of tadpoles. Organelles of the fibroblasts related to protein synthesis show maximal development when the tail reaches the maximal growth. Intracytoplasmic vesicles containing collagen fibrils in several breakdown stages inside fibroblasts are observed during resorption of the tail. These findings suggest that fibroblasts are able to promote synthesis and resorption of collagen during metamorphosis of the tail of tadpoles.
