38 diarrhoeic faecal samples from calves, aged between 1 and 15 days, on 4 dairy cow units were examined by alternate passages on cell cultures. A cytopathogenic rotavirus strain was ultimately isolated by a trypsin-adjuvanted Eagle maintenance medium and by alternate passages on ovine and bovine cells. The strain was identified by the serum neutralization and immunofluorescence tests. The isolate grew well (cytopathic effect being evident) both on fetal bovine kidney cells and on MDBK cells. Virus titre at passage 12 on MDBK was 106.5 CPD50/ml. This is the first report of the isolation of calf diarrhoea rotavirus in Romania.
