A note on laboratory colonization of Aedes (Muscidus) quasiferinus Mattingly 1961, Amphur Muang Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand

Three engorged females of Aedes quasiferinus were collected from Suthep canton in Amphur Muang Chiang Mai, Thailand. In the laboratory, one laid 77 eggs and another 176, all singly. The mean developmental periods were 1.0, 1.1, 1.4, 2.7 and 3.7 days, respectively, for 1st-, 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-instar larvae and pupae. The mean number of larvae of A. togoi (of the same instar as their predator) eaten per instar was 6.9 by 1st-instar larvae, 32.1 by 2nd-instar larvae, 33.8 by 3rd-instar larvae and 63.2 by 4th-instar larvae. Attempts to establish a colony using the F1 progeny were unsuccessful.
