Status asthmaticus treated with ketamine

A patient in status asthmaticus intubated and mechanically ventilated had persisting bronchospasm, despite treatment in maximal doses with aminophyllin, salbutamol and hydrocortisone. The patient received ketamine as bolus injection and continued infusion; which immediately relieved the bronchospasm and raised pulmonary compliance.
