A survey of eating habits among pregnant women in Belfast, UK, showed that 38.7% of women had an unbalanced diet. Such women were more likely to be from the lower social classes, have a lower standard of education, smoke, live in poor housing conditions and eat 'fish and chips' frequently. Few women were given advice about nutrition by any health professionals early in pregnancy.
