Human cysticercosis and intestinal parasitism amongst the Ekari people of Irian Jaya

Forty two of 242 Ekari people from the central Highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, had palpable cysts of Taenia solium, and eggs were found in 7 (3%). Trichuris, Ascaris, hookworms, Strongyloides stercoralis, Strongyloides sp., Entamoeba histolytica, E. coli, E. hartmanni, E. polecki, Balantidium coli and Dientamoeba fragilis were found in 83, 83, 76, 10, 29, 14, 22, 7, 7, 9 and 21% respectively. ELISA tests with T. solium adult and egg antigens and T. saginata cysticerci were not very sensitive but had good specificity.
