A study was conducted in the Bontang area of East Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia, of the mosquitoes biting a human volunteer who was known previously as a carrier of the non-periodic form of Brugia malayi. The results provided circumstantial evidence that the non-periodic form of B. malayi was transmitted by females of Mansonia uniformis or a member of the group of M. bonneae and M. dives. From 11 of the 92 females of M. uniformis dissected, 29 infective (3rd-stage) filarial larvae were isolated. Two of the 26 females of the group of M. bonneae and M. dives contained infective larvae. The single female of M. annulata examined did not contain infective larvae. Dissection of mosquitoes that had fed on a volunteer (known to be a carrier of the non-periodic form of Brugia malayi), while he was doing his normal daily activities in the Bontang area of East Kalimantan, indicated the predominant mosquitoes in the area, Mansonia uniformis and Ma. bonneae/dives, to be potential vectors.Carolyn A.
