Cyclosporine therapy of refractive uveitis

Cyclosporine (CYA) treatment was carried out on 8 cases (15 eyes) with refractory uveitis resistant to conventional therapy. The relationship between CYA effects on uveitis and on immune status was analyzed. The frequency of ocular inflammatory attacks was reduced in all cases and vision improved or was unchanged in 11 out of the 15 eyes, therefore the treatment was considered to be beneficial in 6 out of 8 patients. The trough level of serum CYA was maintained between 50 and 120 ng/ml in all well controlled patients. CYA did not affect subpopulations of peripheral lymphocytes nor serum complement titer. On the other hand, cellular immune responses were suppressed in all CYA-treated patients as indicated by reduced tuberculin reaction responses, lymhocyte proliferation with ConA, and interleukin 2 production.
