An epidemiological study was made in Moscow [Russian SFSR, USSR] of 1244 men and 1238 women (20-69 yrs old) in order to determine the prevalence of smoking in the population. A six-year study was also carried out to determine the effect of smoking on the morbidity rate in coronary heart disease. The disease was diagnosed on the basis of ECG, arterial pressure, blood serum concentration of total cholesterol, triglycerides and .alpha.-lipoprotein cholesterol. The results confirmed that smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease. It is an independent risk factor and intensified the action of other risk factors. The morbidity rate among 40-59-yr-old men with coronary heart disease was 2.3 times higher than in nonsmokers.
