In order to analyze the different forms of clicking sounds a measuring device for simultaneous recording of the opening and closing movements of the mandible and audible clicking sounds of the temporomandibular joints without direct contact was introduced. Using different coloured fluorescent diodes, which were attached to the teeth by paraocclusal splints, the lines of the movement of the mandible were shown photographically in two planes on coloured slides and on standard, good quality paper. The sounds were recorded by contact microphones and the acoustic signals were also transformed via fluorescent diodes into optical signals and were recorded. A sufficient precision and reproducibility of the procedure was guaranteed. The records obtained enable us to draw conclusions about velocity, changes in velocity and deviations of the movements of the mandible at the time when the clicking sounds occurred.
