Anatrichosoma sp infection in a dog

Anatrichosoma sp. eggs were found in routine faecal examination in a 5-month-old Boxer in the USA, who was alert, afebrile and without diarrhoea or abdominal pain. A raised, flaking, erythematous nodule on the dorsal midline in the lumbar region was noted 3 weeks later; skin scrapings from this nodule contained similar eggs. These measured 62.5 x 50.0 micro m. A further scraping taken one week later still contained eggs, although none was present in the faeces. Microscopically, the epidermis of the nodule showed multiple microabscesses, with numerous neutrophils surrounding cross sections of small nematodes. The epithelium was mildly acanthotic and hyperkeratotic. Intact worms were not found.
