A new synthetic pyrethroid, cyfluthrin (OMS 2012) has been evaluated for both larvicidal and adulticidal activity against three mosquito vectors viz., Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles stephensi and Aedes aegypti, and was found to be very effective at low concentrations. Cyfluthrin was found to be effective with LC50 values of 0.0007, 0.001, 0.0227 mg/l against larvae and 0.4525, 0.5096 and 1.8495 .mu.g/cm2 against adults of C. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti and A. stephensi respectively. The adulticidal activity was assessed by undertaking a limited field trial in two localities, viz., Kurichikuppam and VOC Nagar of Pondicherry at the application rates of 20 and 50 mg (ai)/m2 against the urban filariasis vector C. quinquefasciatus. The indoor resting density in the treated huts remained low in comparison to untreated huts for 14 wk at 20 mg(ai)/m2 and 18 wk at the application rate of 50 mg(ai)/m2.
