On the basis of statistical data and on results of studies on family budgets the consumption of dietary fibre (DF) in Poland in general and by different socioeconomic groups (employees, worker-farmers, farmers and retired people) in 1981-82, in the period of food rationing, was calculated and compared with that in 1978, a year of economic prosperity, and also with values recorded for other countries. Proportions of various groups of food products being sources of DF as percentages of the total DF consumption were calculated. Consumption of DF increased in some countries (German Federal Republic, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, USSR) and slightly decreased in Sweden and Poland in the period from 1978 to 1981-82. Values for Poland were 37.5 and 35.3 g daily, respectively. Main sources of DF in Western Europe were cereal products and fruits, in Poland cereal products and potatoes. The level of consumption and sources of DF in Poland depended on socioeconomic group and on income. The daily intake of DF was highest in retired people and farmers, values varying between years from 36.2 to 37.0 and from 35.0 to 36.5 g daily, respectively. Corresponding values for households of worker-farmers and employees were from 33.2 to 34.0 and from 29.2 to 31.1 g daily. In the group of employees the proportion of DF supplied by fruits and vegetables increased with family income.
