Rats given acetylaminofluorene showed fewer tumours when given a stock diet than when given a semipurified diet. Rats given a stock diet with sodium cyclamate 2.5 to 10, the food dye amaranth 5 or Tween 15% showed normal weight gain but rats given a fibre-free diet with the same toxicants showed restricted weight gain and decreased survival. The latter effect was overcome by addition of pectin, lucerne or cellulose 10%. Mice given a fibre-free diet survived pneumococcal infection better than mice given modified stock diets.
