The rate of ectopic pregnancies has increased dramatically over the past decade even though the total number of pregnancies has declined over the same period. This increase is due to the current ability to locate the site of pregnancy at an early stage and the increased prevalence of abortions, contraceptive methods, tubal surgery, sexually transmitted diseases, and pelvic inflammatory diseases. The authors investigated prospectively the clinical profile and risk factors of ectopic pregnancy among 85 cases of ectopic pregnancy admitted to Kamla Nehru Hospital from January 1 to September 30, 1994. The highest incidence of ectopic pregnancy was found among women aged 26-30 years and those who were para 2; 37.6% and 32.9%, respectively. Pain was the most common symptom (91.7%), followed by bleeding per vaginum (71.7%) and amenorrhea (41.4%). High risk factors were present in 67% of cases.
