The evolution of Participatory Forest Management (PFM) in Himachal Pradesh, India is described. Brief descriptions are given of the main initiatives involving PFM which include cooperative forest societies, and three-dimensional forest farming; initiatives through donor-funded projects for PFM (Indo-German Dhauladhar Project, National Social Forestry, Integrated Watershed Development, and Indo-UK Himachal Pradesh Project). The institutionalization of PFM through the Himachal Pradesh Participatory Forest Management Regulation 2001, and linkage with Panchayati RAJ institutions is also described.
