An examination is presented of the determinants of fertility, child mortality and gender bias in child mortality in India using district-level data from the 1981 Census. The findings highlight the importance of women's status (e.g., female literacy and female labour force participation) on mortality and fertility. Higher levels of female literacy and female labour force participation are also associated with significantly lower levels of female bias in child survival. In contrast, variables relating to the general level of development and modernization have relatively weak effects on demographic outcomes.
