Mycological examination of urine in children with various diseases

The incidence of Candida albicans in urine was determined in children hospitalized and treated for various diseases. Mycological investigations of urine in 242 children demonstrated the presence of fungi in 44 cases (18.2%). The highest per cent of positive results was obtained in children with diabetes (31.6%), urinary tract infections (22.9%) and nephrotic syndrome (21.2%). In the control group the cultures were positive in only 4.5% of children. A low per cent of significant counts of C. albicans in urine in children with leukaemia (4.2%) confirmed the efficacy of prophylactic administration of nystatin to these children.
