A clinical survey of 1381 people residing in 2 villages in West Africa, 85% of whom consumed cassava root at least once a day, revealed that none of the people had diabetes and that mean blood glucose levels were similar whether cassava was consumed or not. The results indicate that a high carbohydrate/cassava intake with a low protein intake does not cause diabetes.(wz)
