The number of artificial turf pitches used for soccer in Norway is increasing. The major tool for improving the standard of top-level Norwegian soccer is to increase the length of the season by using artifical turf. During the winter-seasons 1985 and 1986 an official winter league was formed with the top 16 Norwegian teams participating. The games were investigated by the authors. Conclusions: The investigation showed an increased frequency of serious injuries playing soccer on artificial turd during wintertime with the Norwegian type of weather conditions. A difference was found between the types of turf used and the authors stress the importance of choosing the turf most suited is Norwegian weather conditions.
