Radiotherapy of early glottic carcinoma

A total of 60 patients with glottic carcinoma, which is curable by either surgery or radiotherapy, were tested by radiation alone between 1970-1980. 29 (48%) were classified as T1No and 31 (52%) as T2No. Surgery was reserved for recurrences. The 5-year actuarial survival of all patients was 90% and actuarial disease-free survival was 95%. In 10 patients (17%) there was local failure, and five of them were salvaged by surgery. There were no significant acute or long-term complications of the radiation. Factors influencing treatment success included involvement of the anterior commissure, degree of differentiation, treatment volume and technique of radiation.
