High resolution computed tomography of the temporal bone has become increasingly important in the last few years. In order to demonstrate the middle ear space in axial section with exactness we have developed five standard images. The following points must be noted. 1. The head should be tipped slightly to one side at a 30.degree. angle. 2. Only one temporal bone should be examined. 3. Special interpolation technique should be used to make very small structures visible as for example the stapes and the incudostapedial articulation. Apart from a detailed description of the axial images the importance of coronal section is also stressed. As a result of our previous investigations of trauma, chronic ear disease, cholesteatoma, congenital malformation, neoplasia, ossicula replacement devices and cochlea implants, the indications using CT are outlined. Thus the standard x-rays (Schuller, Stenvers, Mayer) which have been applied for years have clearly lost their significance. Hypocycloidal tomography in hospitals with CT facilities must be rejected. Besides shortening the period of investigation and reducing x-ray contamination CT currently is the best possible method of investigation of the temporal bone.
