Peripheral blood T cell subpopulations and blocking antibodies in renal allograft recipients

To evaluate renal allograft rejection we studied Fc receptor blocking antibodies as well as T cell subsets and their functions in eight men and four women aged 32-46 years who had survived 10-20 years after renal allograft transplants. All had received standard immunosuppressive treatment consisting of 2-2.5 mg/kg azathioprine and 5-10 mg prednisone daily. When tested all had a functioning renal allograft. There was no difference in the number of the T suppressor cells between the patient and control groups, but there was a decrease in the total number of T helper cells. We also demonstrated reduction in T helper cell activity and the presence of Fc receptor blocking antibodies. These findings in the immunoregulatory mechanism may be beneficial to renal transplant recipients.
