A study of 15 healthy young adult non-obese subjects (8 women, 9 men; ages 22-29) assessed the maximum possible extra heat loss due to small body movements that are not standardized during sitting in human whole-body calorimeter activity programs, with the significance of such movements evaluated relative to within- and between-subject variabilities of 24-hour energy expenditure. Differences in the effects of passive vs. active sitting on heat loss and basal metabolism were observed, suggesting the need to standardize the manner of sitting in such programs.(wz)
