The effects of manifest and latent propagated sensation along the channel on the acupuncture regulation of cardiac function

The influence of propagated sensation along the channel (PSC) on the effect of acupuncture at Neiguan (P 6) acupoint was investigated in 170 subjects. All the eight parameters of cardiac functions produced marked changes in 76 cases with PSC and to a lesser degree in 94 cases with no manifest PSC. There were significant differences in seven parameters between the two groups. Of the 94 subjects with no manifest PSC, 58 (62%) showed latent PSC. After stimulation on the Neiguan point, seven parameters were changed significantly in the subjects with positive latent PSC, while six parameters were not changed in subjects with no latent PSC. There were obvious differences in six parameters between the two groups. The results indicated that acupuncture on Neiguan improved the cardiac function and ECG very remarkably in subjects with manifest PSC toward the heart and also in subjects with poisitive latent PSC. Both manifest and latent PSC had obvious regulative effects on the solid and hollow organs belonging to this meridian, though to a different degree.
