Details are given on how to maintain colonies of Anopheles sergentii in the laboratory. Larval development times and survival rates were determined for 3 water qualities (tap water, distilled water and mud slurry) and 4 temperatures (17, 22, 27 and 34 degrees C). Under optimum conditions (mud slurry at 22-27 degrees C) larval survival was 85%, although the fastest rates of development were at 34 degrees C. Mean life expectancy at emergence for mated adults was 23.3 days at 27 degrees C and 70-80% RH. Net reproductive rate (R0), mean generation time (G) and instantaneous rate of increase (rm) were, respectively, 45.8 females/female per generation, 29.7 days and 0.127. In the context of its vector potential for transmission of Plasmodium falciparum or P. vivax, adults of A. sergentii had a daily survivorship rate of 0.95.
