Bronchoscopy using the fiber optic bronchoscope under local analgesia

Fibre bronchoscopy under local analgesia demands few resources and eliminates problems with air pollution connected with general anaesthesia. A method of administering local analgesia is described. Out of 129 consecutive bronchoscopies with the fibre bronchoscope in a department of pulmonary medicine, 124 could be carried out under local analgesia. The indications for bronchoscopy represented a broad spectrum of pulmonary conditions. We find that the method is simple and acceptable by the patients. Local analgesia proved fully sufficient in 119 out of the 124 patients examined in this manner (96%). The method increases the diagnostic possibilities of pulmonary physicians considerably.
