Analysis of the effectiveness and adverse effects of the drug combinations CAP and CEP in the therapy of patients in the advanced stages of ovarian cancer

Thirty two patients with ovarian cancer were entered in a randomised trial comparing treatment with cisplatin + adriamycin + cyclophosphamide (CAP) to cisplatin + 4'-epi-adriamycin + cyclophosphamide (CEP). Patients were radically operated before chemotherapy but no previous irradiation or chemotherapy was performed. The two treatment arms were identical as far as the distribution according to prognostic factors is concerned. Complete response rates for the two arms were similar (9/16 CAP, 8/16 CEP). In terms of time to progression (MTP) and survival (MST) the two group of patients did not differ from each other significantly except the survival to the minimal advantage of CAP treatment (p = 0.0499): MTP CAP 16.8 mts, MTP CEP 14.3 mts; MST CAP 25.3 mts, MST CEP 21.0 mts. The toxicity of the CEP combination was milder than that of CAP. Cardiac toxicity has not occurred in the CEP treated group (2/16 CAP; 0/16 CEP).
