We studied 12 patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (10 with AIDS and 2 with the related complex); we investigated the presence of cytomegalovirus in cellular cultures in several clinical samples, depending on the symptoms, anti-CMV antibodies by means of the complement fixation technique, and anti-CMV IgM by enzyme-immunoassay. In 81 clinical samples (MV was isolated in 32 from 9 patients). On the basis of the type of positive samples, 4 patients had significant pulmonary infections (isolates from bronchoalveolar lavage or bronchial brushing), another was highly suspect (isolates from sputum), another had encephalitis (isolates from cerebral biopsy) and another had retinis (isolates from several ocular samples); in the two remaining cases no focal findings were present. Three of the 12 patients were consistently negative. Except for a patient who developed anti-CMV antibody seroconversion and another with positive anti-CMV IgM, the remaining patients had serological findings consistent with normality in spite of severe CMV infection. We think that this lack of serological response is a consequence of the infection by the immunodeficiency virus.
