Risk of transfusion malaria in Nairobi

Between May 1985 and August 1986 a total of 4470 units of blood collected for the Nairobi Blood Bank were screened for malarial parasites. 80 (1.75%) units were found positive for malarial parasites; 75 units were infected with Plasmodium falciparum and 10 with P. malariae (8 had mixed infection of P. falciparum and P. malariae).
