This article contains the American Dietetic Association (ADA) position on supporting the need for appropriate nutrition services for persons with developmental disabilities. This position was adopted by the ADA House of Delegates on October 26, 1986. Overall, the provision of nutrition programs and services helps individuals develop to their maximum educational, vocational, and social potential, thereby becoming productive members of society. Nutrition concerns of the developmentally disabled are discussed, i.e., feeding problems, growth retardation/altered growth rate, obesity, drug-nutrient interactions metabolic disorders and caregiver-related problems. The ADA recommends several measures to help meet the nutrition needs of persons with developmental disabilities.
