Around 7% of babies born in the United Kingdom are of low birth weight, two thirds of them because of prematurity: most of them are normal at birth, but their immaturity places them at increased risk during the neonatal period. They require a lot of support if they are to emerge unscathed, and careful biochemical monitoring is of fundamental importance. Biochemical analyses are also central to the investigations of sick neonates suspected of having an inborn error of metabolism.
