A series of 64 consecutive patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were randomly premedicated intravenously with either diazepam or midazolam in a double-blind test. There were no differences in vital signs, ease of intubation, degree of sedation, incidence or retching, recovery time or tolerance. But 26% of those who got midazolam almost "did not feel" the examination, as compared with 7% of those who got diazepam. Amnesia was considerably more frequent among those who received midazolam, 32% vs 7%. It is felt that midazolam is more advantageous than diazepam as premedication for endoscopy.
