Septic severity score. A simple method for the evaluation of intensive care patients with multiple organ failure

The mortality of multiple organ failure remains high in spite of major advances in the care of the critically ill patient and thus represents a considerable challenge. Because of the need for more objective data in this group of patients we evaluated prospectively Steven's Septic Severity Score (SSS) in 18 patients where multiple organ failure was expected or had started. We found a significant difference in SSS at admission, mean SSS during the stay and maximum SSS for the patients that died and for the survivors. SSS correlated well with progress and deterioration for all patients.
