It seems likely the first oophorectomy which was carried out in France must have been in the years 1847-1848 (Woyeikowsky and Vaullegard). This surgical procedure, however, was carried out much earlier. In Germany Chrysmar carried out the operation in 1819 and Ephraim McDowell in America, in Kentucky, did it in 3 cases between 1809 and 1816. Whereas Robert Houstoun operated on a woman in Glasgow in 1701, he did not carry out oophorectomy but punctured the cyst through a laparotomy incision.
