Morphological changes on dialyzer membranes, in blood and in the lung tissue, caused by haemodialysis

Morphological examination of three types of dialyzers with cuprophan membrane showed adhaesion of leucocytes and, to a lesser degree, of platelets to the membrane. The number of adhering cells was increasing during the dialysis. All dialyzed patients showed an initial leucopenia followed by some rebound leucocytosis and with a shift to the left in the differential count. The deviations in the leucocyte number were least pronounced with the hollow fiber dialyzer. The patients on hollow fiber dialyzers showed marked eosinophilia during haemodialysis. Platelets and lymphocytes did not return to the pre-dialysis counts after the initial drop. Histology of the lung tissue from 20 patients who died after multiple dialyses did not reveal any permanent morphological changes attributable to haemodialysis.
