The incidence of renal failure (RF) has been studied in 235 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and 13 patients have been detected (5.5%). RF was acute in 12 cases and mild chronic in the remaining ones. In 5 patients, non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) could be directly implicated in the pathogenesis of RF. The possible association with other predisposing factors has also been analyzed: age, sex, duration of RA, type of NSAID, dosage and duration of therapy with NSAID, therapy with long-acting drugs, hypertension diuretics, beta-blocking agents and diabetes mellitus. A statistically significant association (p < 0.05) was found for age, duration of the disease, hypertension and diuretics.
