Effect of intracisternal 6-hydroxydopamine on the cardiovascular response induced by carotid occlusion and asphyxia in rats

Intracisternaly administered 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), 200 .mu.g .times. 3 doses induced, after 20-30 days post-treatment, a blockade of the hypertensive response to bilateral carotid occlusion and an almost total abolition of the blood pressure increase induced by asphyxia. Peripheral arteries sensitivity to intravenously administered noradrenaline was unchanged in the rats pretreated with 6-OHDA. Hypertension-induced vagal bradycardia was not modifed in this group of animals. 6-OHDA treatment produced a 75-100 per cent depletion of the noradrenaline content of brain areas and spinal cord. It appears that the integrity of central noradrenergic terminals is essential for the discharge of central sympathetic impulses evoked by peripheral baroreceptor and chemoreceptor stimulation.
