Effect of isolation on testicular and adrenal function in mice

Significant increase in testicular weight in sexually isolated Swiss male mice was observed after 3 and 5 weeks of isolation. This increase became less marked after 7 weeks of isolation, however after 9 weeks there was a significant decrease. Histology of testes showed evidence of decreased activity in animals isolated for 7 and 9 weeks. Adrenal cortex showed marked increase in activity with an increase in cortical thickness and appearance of small cortical nodules during 7 and 9 weeks of isolation. These changes indicate that sexual isolation causes an appreciable amount of stress that affects the activity of testes.
