A retrospective analysis is reported in 97 patients treated surgically for large bowel neoplasms in the years 1985-1984. The aim of the study was to establish the causes and types of the reoperations and to assess the obtained therapeutic results. Within 6 weeks 24 patients were reoperated on. These reoperations were called.sbd.early. After 6 additional weeks 15 patients were reoperated.sbd.these procedures were called.sbd.late. Twenty-three early and 18 late emergency operations, and 8 early and 3 late elective operations were done. Reoperations were more frequent in patients who had had the first operation performed as an emergency procedure. The main cause of reoperations early after the first operations was embedding of artificial anus or leaking anastomosis, while the main cause of late reoperations was humor recurrence. Operations for restoration of intestinal patency carried out within the first 3 months after the first operation gave poor results. The mortality after early reoperations was 66.6%, and after late reoperations it was 20%.
