Surgical results in patients with multiple polyps of the large intestine

The results of surgical treatment of 134 patients with multiple polyposis of the large intestine up to 7 yr after the endoscope electroexcision were analyzed. Every 3rd patient had a recurrence (23.9%), cancer (1.5%) or new polyps. The number of recurrences was the least in the multiple form of affection (13.3%) or when polyps with a diameter of up to 0.5 cm (5.4%) were removed. The risk factors of recurrences were an increase in the number and size of the polyps, enhanced transformation of the intestinal villi and signs of polyp malignization. Small polyps(up to 0.5 cm) should be removed and medical checks-up continued after a 5 yr follow-up period.
