Adopting random number generation test (RNG test), the effect of various tempo from 30/min to 90/min upon the RNG index (RI) was investigated. RI was calculated from 100 respones (numbers) generated verbally for each of the subjects according to the method of Evans. As a result, RI increased as the tempo became faster for healthy subjects, while that of schizophrenics remained lower and attained to the maximum at 60/min, and the differences of RI between both groups were significant at all tempo except for 90/min, with maximum t value at 60/min. In conclusion, the tempo 60/min was considered to be optimal to distinguish schizophrenics and healthy subjects.
