Clinicopathologic manifestations in 2 cases of primary leiomyosarcoma of the liver

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare disease and is often mistaken as carcinoma of the liver. This study intends to map a line between them. Based on the clinical observation, we have found that leiomyosarcoma is a voluminously large tumor, showing cystic change and alternating with solid so that its neighboring organs are often pressed. The liver function is slightly affected but rarely associated with cirrhotic change as its blood supply is plenty. In comparison with carcinoma, leiomyosarcoma runs a longer course, progresses more slowly and the patient's general condition is not affected so much. B-US examination, AFP assessment and selective angiogram can be used as procedures for differential diagnosis. Leiomyosarcoma of the liver is best treated by surgical exertion and its prognosis is better than that of carcinoma.
