Incidence and control of classical swine fever in West Germany

Classical swine fever was eradicated in the German Federal Republic in 1981, but recurred in November 1982. There were 508 outbreaks in 1983 and 1038 in 1984. Problem areas were the high-density pig farming areas of North-Rhine Westphalia and Western Lower Saxony. Fattening herds accounted for 54%, mixed herds for 29% and breeding herds for 17%. Live vaccine (China strain) was used on pigs in strongly contaminated areas and areas at risk from June 1984, and infected herds were slaughtered and the carcasses destroyed. The number of outbreaks decreased greatly since December 1984.
